Day 2 part 2 : The Spirit
Thursday, September 10, 2009 at 3:23PM Seeing the ship, the Carnival Spirit, from the outside is making you small, getting on board even smaller. As soon as you’re on you almost forget you travel on a ship. It’s almost three hundred meters in length, a total of twelve decks in height and on the decks, bars, restaurants, cabins, spas, pools, a gym, etc.
Writing at 6 AM, hm .. no 5 AM as we’ve passed another time zone, we’re now in Alaska. But I slept already better.
I checked out most of the decks and especially the gym as I will be exercising each day, a least that is what I think now. You have to do that else you will finish like the many rather big Americans on board. They told me the Carnival Spirit is not like the Holland America Line ships, it will have a much younger audience. And although there are some very young ones, even babies, the average age is way beyond mine, 51. But it’s not only the age, also the weight of most people is staggering.
Part of the ship is the Casino. We have just left the port and already many people are playing. Especially the bigger ones, it seems the chairs are made for them.
Also starting is a free dinner/lunch, or welcoming reception. I know how they became so big, they must travel by cruise often as most is free and that is shown, with full returning plates.
My dinnertime is the late one, a quarter pas eight, so I got me a quick nap. During the nap, my own “servant” came by, Gede. I think he is Malaysian as many. He will be there the entire cruise, as the waitresses at the dinner, Oxana from the Ukraine is one, and the other is from Estonia.
My table is an interesting bunch of females, four from the US and one from Australia. The Americans, the younger ones bit curved, all single, a mother two sisters and one best friend, typical Americans. Two of them are working at Mc Donalds. They are in one room, not much bigger than mine, must be interesting. It was good food, and also very nice conversation, them getting more frank with every glass they drank. I was invited to join for the rest of the evening to got to one of the many shows. I politely declined, at least this time. After a little walk went to sleep, still jet lagged.
